Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why do we have a Spay and Neuter Policy?
Apart from preventing any accidental pregnancies, this requirement is one of safety. Even the friendliest, non-aggressive, submissive, un-fixed dog will release hormones that cause competitiveness and, even aggression, with the dogs around them.
2. Why do we advise regular Flea and Tick treatments and nasal Bordetella Vaccinations?
Rossland doesn't necessarily have a flea problem and ticks don't usually transfer from one dog to another, but Rossland does have a big canine lice issue. Our local veterinarians have found that regular application with products like Advantix & Revolution is very effective in reducing lice infestation.
Bordetella (Kennel Cough) is effectively the Canine Cold. Our facility is well ventilated and regularly sanitized, nevertheless puppies and other dogs with high sensitivity or a lowered immune system can still contract Kennel Cough in places like daycare. We do our best to protect your dog and keep our facility clean, but we can't promise your dog won't contract Bordetella. We advise that you talk to your vet about your dog getting a Bordertella nasal vaccination before coming to daycare.
If your dog comes to Tails with a parasitic infestation or Kennel Cough they will be turned away.
3. What is your Assessment Process?
There are 2 ways to complete the Assessment Process.
i) After filling out the application form, call Tails to book a behaviour assessment. Your dog's behaviour will be assessed by our capable staff during a half day daycare session.
ii) If your dog has passed an assessment by an approved professional daycare (such as Barks 'n Rec or All Play Pet Care) and has attended regular dog daycare within the last year, then your dog may be considered pre-approved for Tails Dog Daycare. Proof will be required in the form of a letter of referral from the facility stating that your dog has passed the assessment at that facility and is in good standing.
4. What is our Vaccination / Immunization Policy?
Vaccinations and over-vaccination in dogs and cats is a hot topic and there are varying opinions between Holistic and DVM Veterinarians. Tails policy is based around the advice given by Dr. Ron Schultz, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathological Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Veterinary Medicine. He has studied and researched animal vaccinations for over 30 years and he knows what he is talking about! His current recommendation is:
Dr. Schultz recommends that core vaccines (Distemper CDV, Parvo CPV-2 and Adenovirus CAV) are essential for all dogs. And correctly administered Modified Live Vaccines (MLV) have an immunological memory of at least seven years.
As a result, Dr. Schultz suggests that dogs receive core vaccines no more frequently than every three years. (Source: http://www.news.wisc.edu/8413)
Therefore Tails is willing to accept one of the following 3 forms of vaccination / immunization records:
i) A standard up to date vaccination certificate for Parvovirus, Distemper and Adenovirus. Modified or killed vaccine types are both acceptable as long as they have been administered on a schedule as per the advice of your veterinarian.
ii) Proof of the correct administration (2 vaccines given not less than 2 weeks apart and no more than 3 weeks apart) of a modified live vaccine (MLV) for the core diseases listed above. The dog must have received these vaccines within the last 5 years. Or have had a booster within the last 5 years.
iii) A current titer certificate from a DVM Veterinarian proving that your dog has sufficient immunity from Canine Parvovirus Type 2 (CPV-2), Canine Distemper (CDV) & Canine Adenovirus Type 2 (CAV-2).
